About the Blog

The blog on this site started with the intention of dealing with issues such as performance, musicology, research, reviews (of CDs, DVDs, concerts and books on music), education, theory, and analysis. It is written by Avior Byron and guest writers.

The blog aims to provide useful information for music lovers by encouraging critical writing, discussion and international access to music and information on music. The blog also deals with matters that are not particular to Israeli music or musicology. It is one of the first musicology blogs on the web, a pioneer blog with relation to performance studies, and the first of such Israeli blogs written in English.

One of its main aims is to encourage discussion, as done in conferences, yet with a larger audience (including music lovers who are not professional musicians), using the benefits and technology of the Internet. The nature of blogs helps to encourage a type of writing about music that is less formal and arguably more passionate. You are welcome to comment on the blog posts and contribute to the discussions.

Byron did his Ph.D. in Music, Royal Holloway Collage, University of London, under the supervision of Prof. John Rink. Thesis: 'Schoenberg as Performer: An Aesthetics in Practice'. B.A. Degree from Tel-Aviv University in Musicology and Orchestra Conducting.

Byron's interests concern the theory and analysis of various aspects of musical performance and interpretation: recordings, aesthetic writings, reception, history, cultural studies and philosophy. He has a special interest in avantgarde music of the twentieth century, especially that of Arnold Schoenberg. He plans to do research on twentieth-century interpretations of music from other periods, and to discuss issues of Jewish identity in music.

Byron studied composition privately with Reuven Sarussi (for about a year) and with Dr. Yuval Shaked (for two and a half years). He studied Jazz guiter with Gil Dor.

During  2004 - 2008 he lectured in the Bar-Ilan University in Israel. Courses for postgraduate students: 'Performance Studies' – meeting the most updated research on performance, 'Schoenberg’s performance aesthetics and practice', 'Research Methods' – review of contemporary research methods. Courses for undergraduate students: 'Counterpoint Bach', 'History of Western Music 1' and 'Harmony'.

Since 2006 Byron is general manager of the company Byron Seminars, which teaches languages and supplies translations. He lives in Israel, married to Jitka, who is a painter, and father of Daniela and Jonathan.
