Call for Papers: International Conference

Saturday-Sunday 13-14 September 2014

Arnold Schoenberg is best known for his extensive writings on harmony and counterpoint and the development of twelve-tone composition, but he is also known for the aesthetic qualities of his highly expressive works. Whether it is the early atonal works, his dodecaphonic works, or the allusions to tonality embraced in his later works written during his exile in the United States of America, his influence on other composers and artists has been hugely significant. To mark the composer’s 140th birth anniversary, this two-day conference aims to bring together scholars investigating Schoenberg’s life and works from a broad range of perspectives, including performance, analysis and historical musicology, in an effort to enhance the understanding of the legacy of this renowned composer.

The Call For Paper is now open and we would like to invite papers addressing these or other topics of interest:

History of Music Analysis | Techniques of Composition | Historiography | Aesthetics |

Performance Practice | Opera or Theatrical Dramaturgy | Philosophy, Religion or Politics |

Music on Screen and other Visual Media | Gender, Sexuality, Class, Race or Language |

Technologies and Digitalization | Archives of Sketches, Paintings and Correspondences |

We welcome abstracts of up to 250 words for (i) 20-minute papers with 10 minutes of questions and answers, (ii) short lecture-recital, or (iii) poster presentations. We also invite proposals for 90-minute panels of other presentation formats. The executive committee is chaired by Dr. Nicholas McKay (Head of Department, Canterbury Christ Church University), and consists of Dr. Stelios Chatziiosifidis (Canterbury Christ Church University), Jun Zubillaga-Pow (King’s College London), and Danielle Hood (University of Leeds). The conference is generously supported by Canterbury Christ Church University, the Arnold Schoenberg Centre and the Royal Musical Association.
